The Empire had gained power across the continent, but its seat of power was a utopic region in what is now known as the [Badlands](The%20Badlands.md). >## Ventil's Betrayal and the Collapse > >The downfall of the Empire began after Emperor Synonine Twelvestar the Seventh was betrayed and brutally murdered by his son Ventil, the heir to the throne, ending the line of rulers. The cruelty of his actions was so great that it cursed Ventil into becoming the first dark elf, and it cursed the lands around which the murder took place, transforming it into the wastelands as which the Badlands now exist. Ventil however succeeded in his goals, becoming a [Traitor](Traitor "wikilink"), but in doing so he abandoned the Empire. > >The death of the Emperor and the disappearance of his heir opened a power vacuum for control over the Empire, and many wars broke out between the Scarab Lords, the Empire\'s aristocracy, for control. Because the capital of the Empire was now ruined, much of conflict focused around the region of [Majital](Majital.md), where the Empire also had extensive control and where the the Mage\'s Guild would later be located. > >The fighting between the elves was so great that the Empire quickly collapsed, ending any hopes of reunification and marking the end of a centralized rulership over Kalkatesh. Still though the elves fought, and the use of magic in the wars was so extensive that the [leylines](Lifestream "wikilink") of Kalkatesh were thrown of balance, threatening to reduce or possibly even remove the ability for spellcasting in the continent. However, it was the great efforts of the gnomes as they sacrificed their waking selves that protected the leylines from further damage, which is what allows spellcasting in Kalkatesh today. It was also out of these efforts that [Raquel](Raquel.md) ascended to be the patron-deity of the gnomes. > >Though the gnomes had protected the leylines of Kalkatesh, they could not prevent all of the damage, which drained all of the life from Majital and transformed it too into a desert. The elves continued their wars, but eventually all of the forces were weakened to such an extent that the fighting could not continue, marking an almost total end to the dominance of elves over Kalkatesh. All that remains of the Empire in the present day is the many ruins in Majital and the Badlands, and the seat of the Emperor in the Iitanas Imperium.
