# Runes
Characters from Whyxxstar gain a resource pool called Runes. This resource pool represents the ancient words of power from the Jotun language that permeate their culture. Characters with Runes can tap into this resource pool to do the following.
Increase a spell's damage die by 1 step.
Add Tier I of an [Elemental](Elemental.md) affliction to the next weapon attack they make. This fades after the attack.
Gain [resistance](Resistance.md) on an ability used by a Martial class.
The maximum amount of Runes a character has is equal to the number of [Character Paths](Character%20Paths.md) they possess. This resource pool is refreshed whenever the character finishes a comfortable long rest.
