# Block
Keywords - *[Core](Core.md)*, *[Mundane](Prism/Glossary/Keywords/Typing%20Effects/Mundane.md)*, *[Reaction](Prism/Glossary/Keywords/Typing%20Effects/Reaction.md)*
Target - Self
Range - Self
The character makes a block attempt against an attack of an enemy. The character makes a contested ability check. The character may use [Vigor](Vigor.md), [Competence](Competence.md), or [Stamina](Stamina.md). The attacker may use [Prowess](Prowess.md), [Competence](Competence.md), or [Authority](Authority.md). If the character succeeds, they may roll their shield’s block rating. They then reduce the amount of damage dealt to them from the opposing source equal to that block rating’s total roll.
### Notable Rules
The APC of the [Block](Block.md) Core action is reduced by the Tiers of [Taunt](Prism/Glossary/Keywords/Afflictions/Mundane/Taunt.md) that the attacking creature is currently afflicted by, if you are the source of that Taunt affliction.
- So, if a creature is afflicted with Tier II Taunt, and they target an attack against the creature that is the source of the Taunt, the creature that is being attacked reduces the APC of their Block Core action against that attack by 2.
