It is a land that is steeped in a history of war and catastrophe, the greatest of which, The Reckoning, nearly destroyed all of creation, before the intervention of [The Seven](The%20Seven.md). A band of mortals that rose up and put a stop to the greatest threat creation had ever known. Sixty-four years later, the land left behind struggles to recover from its wounds and old secrets begin to bubble to the surface, new struggles emerge and old threats return. After the events of the [Violet Arc](Violet%20Arc), and the course of many centuries, Kalkatesh became a paragon of technology due to the invention of a substance called [Steam](Steam.md). # [
Continental Map
](Kalkatesh%20Regions.md) >[!info|center clean no-t no-i sban] >[![Kalkatesh_Map](Kalkatesh_Map.webp)](Kalkatesh_Map.webp) --- #
Notable Recent Events
*
These were provided by Arcadum in the Discord, in lieu of the beginning of the
[
Aelenclast Arc.
](Aelenclast.md)*
## **
Imperial Calendar Year 1770
** It has been 500 years since the events of what is known as Last Stand. When all of creation was held in the balance and the Prism was made whole once more. Peace and stability spread through out Verum and on the continent of Kalkatesh, innovation has flourished. The recent invention of Aldol Von Dulgoranza, a child prodigy of the one of the most famous of scientific families in Kalkatesh, called Steam, has led to an explosion of productivity and wonders once only reserved for magic. The rudimentary alchemical engines that populated only the wealthiest or privileged of society now have become more powerful and common place. As such the current geographical, religious and political landscape has changed all across the continent. Factions that were once essential have evolved or been replaced entirely. The following are the most notable changes:
- *The World Wanderers, once a non-national policing force for the great world way roads that encircled Kalkatesh, have all but vanish. this is because the individual capacity for a person to defend themselves on the road has increased so dramatically, so much so that the need to hire rangers and to upkeep them have faded, to only niche area or specialists. Ironically, the roads are now littered with vagrancy, mana addicts and mutated creatures, making travel more dangerous then it ever was. But it did provide a constant source of work for the adventuring guilds of Kalkatesh.*
- *The Mages Guild has splintered into several, separate organizations that attempt to consolidate power in the barely functioning republic of Majital. The old mageocracy all but faded to the shadows from the invention of Steam. The once harsh deserts slowly but surely returning to the verdant lands they were before the Scarab Wars, and the last lingering pockets of those that seek the old ways have been relegated to conspiracy theorists and laughing stocks.*
- *Steton's over-hunting of the monster population was thought to be a blessing before the invention of Steam. Now, the need for adventurers battling evil monsters was replaced by an abundance of self-sufficiency, leading to a drought of work for monster slayers. This lead many of the once proud and noble Steton Striders to turn to banditry, extortion and other criminal activity. The situation became so bad, that a recent political revolution has seen the old monarchy disbanded and new, democratic republic rise to take its place.*
- *Krazax used Steam technology to delve more deeply into the earth then ever before. They were able to finally pierce the Heartstone that lies at the bottom of the world. The price they paid is still not fully understood, and all that is known for certain is that there was a great shadow that fell over the halls of the children of Astaroth. Those that survived have become isolationists, and the humans of the lowlands have taken up aiding their allies in the mountains.*
- *Dolten has seen its beautiful and dark forest finally tamed by the power of Steam. The forest cleared away at an alarming rate. The druids ignored in their warnings, and the creatures that once lived within its protective boughs now forced into the light. Vampires, Skinwalkers, Sentient Dead and the other night creatures now live as second class citizens and the witches, once the secret rulers of Dolten, have been deposed, the value of their witchcraft evaporated and having been branded criminals by the country’s new dictator, known as Lord Nightfall.*
- *Daborak is in the midst of a cultural upheaval. The invention of Steam has lead to further indoctrination of Steam powered carriages, the likes of which challenge the speed, strength and upkeep costs of the traditional horse, even ones as intelligent as the horselords of Daborak. The widespread use of the Steam carriages, due to how much less money and time needed to acquire one, has drastically unstabilized the identity and economy of the country.*
- *Khao, a country once held in check by the limitations of the alchemical engines, has now, with the power of steam, completely abandoned any permanent settlements on the ground. Instead, they only send raiding parties to the surface on wings made of metal and Steam. For the first time in their history, the city dwellers of Khao have left the tribal Khaons behind, breaking ancient familial ties as the prominence of the Black Pantheon within the city of Khao has caused a dissolution and uncaring approach to their less fortunate bretheren. Now the Khaons on the ground are left to the mercy of the T’sar jungle, which has become changed due to the shifting mana of the planet.*
- *Orde has mostly maintained a hold on its culture and stability with the invention of Steam, however religion has had difficulty competing with the ease of use of Steam. The faith people once put in the gods now switched to something they could more easily witness, touch and feel. The theocrats of Orde have recently attempted to ban the use of Steam by non-church officials in order to stem this tide, but that has only made things worse, as now it seems foreign influence is causing strife on its borders.*
- *Bloodwave Bay was forever changed with the invention of Steam. Now, ships could be ran with far less sailors, resistant to storms, easier to resupply. The presence of all the untapped power of the vessels, coupled with the return of the Vega people to the continent, combined together to form a new nation known as Cycle. Now this new nation must survive the coming tides of history and hold onto the islands that have now become its home.*
- *The Badlands have had the once sickly geology changed into a place of plenty and security. The Orcish people, looking to the heroes of the past now attempt to lead a simple but fair lifestyle. The invention of Steam has caused the sickness of the Badlands to be all but cured and the orcish population to explode, making them the second most numerous race on Kalkatesh. In tandem, the elves of Kalkatesh, long separated between their imperial and nomadic heritages, finally converge once more into a budding empire, hungry to return to what it once was. Maintaining an alliance with the orcs, the Imperial elves changed their strategies to diplomacy and commerce rather then a conquering hand.*
## Current Common Knowledge: *Steam is made from mana-infused water super heated in a metal container.* *Technology is to be respected, not feared.* *Religion is a cultural luxury, not a spiritual requirement.* *Time has finally been repaired by the gods, so it is up to mortals to properly keep it.* *Fashion and function are both required for prosperity.* *Steam addiction is pitiable and not uncommon.*
## Current Viewpoints of Other Continents: *People from other continents are interesting and primitive, and simply need proper instruction to prosper.* *[Corvanis](Corvanis.md) considers themselves to be our rivals. It more like they are pale imitations of the real thing.* *[Elda'Sharkai](Elda'Sharkai.md) is an evil place that is full of a confused people.* *[Glies](Glies.md) is home to some of the best artists of our time, and their work is highly valued.* *[Ryne](Ryne.md) is a place that learned a lesson in warfare and pacifism, their plight is their own fault.* *[Whyxxstar](Whyxxstar.md) is filled with barbarians with pretty rocks and are just as likely to attack you as talk to you. But their gods paid a heavy price to help protect the world, so maybe be nice to them.* *[Aelenclast](Aelenclast.md) will be a place of profit and prosperity; we cannot allow others to claim it before us.*
